Construction Worker helping heatstroke coworker

Heat Stress Management, Prevention, and Monitoring

Presented: Mar 27, 2024  Available until: Apr 1, 2025

Workers exposed to high temperatures, such as those in construction, agriculture, manufacturing, and other outdoor or industrial environments, face an increased risk of heat-related illnesses. If not managed properly, these conditions can lead to decreased productivity, serious health consequences, and even fatalities. Industrial hygienists and safety professionals must have the knowledge and tools to effectively prevent and manage heat stress. The lack of awareness, inadequate risk assessments, insufficient controls, and lack of proper monitoring are critical gaps that need to be addressed. Dr. Farcas will discuss heat stress risks and how you can assess those risks, implement controls, and train your employees on heat stress prevention.

Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe Heat Stress Risks and Impacts: The participants will learn the physiological effects of heat stress and its potential impact on worker health and productivity.
  2. Conduct Effective Heat Risk Assessments: The participants will learn how to identify and obtain the skills and tools needed to perform thorough heat risk assessments in various work environments.
  3. Implement Engineering and Administrative Controls:  The participants will learn several engineering controls (such as ventilation and cooling systems) and administrative controls (like work-rest cycles and hydration strategies) to mitigate heat stress.
  4. Utilize Monitoring and Wearable Technologies:  The participants will be introduced to the latest environmental sensors and wearable devices that help in real-time monitoring of heat stress conditions.
  5. Train employees in Heat Stress Prevention: The participants will be able to highlight the importance of training employees to recognize heat-related illnesses and take proactive measures.
