Benzene - Its Challenges and Uses

Presented: Jun 10, 2025  Available until: Jun 30, 2026

Benzene is one of the top ten chemicals produced in the United States. Benzene exposure has been shown to increase the risk of leukemia and lymphoma.  Although benzene emissions have decreased in the US since federal regulators lowered the occupational exposure limit in 1987, many occupations still expose workers to benzene, which is prevalent in the environment. Using examples of benzene exposure events, we will discuss its characteristics, uses, and current issues.

Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the characteristics of benzene
  2. Name where benzene is found, its uses, and how humans are exposed to it
  3. List the effects of benzene on the human body
  4. Discuss current issues with benzene
