Making the Right Call: Exposure Decision Analysis

Evidence collected by NIOSH indicates that industrial hygienists (IHs) make inaccurate and underestimated exposure judgments when relying on professional judgment and rudimentary analysis. The use of simple, freely available statistical tools and Bayesian Decision Analysis can substantially increase IHs’ exposure judgment accuracy. This webinar will teach the core concepts and approaches associated with statistically supported exposure decision analysis. The content presented in this webinar will be a distillation of the concepts covered in AIHA’s free “Making Accurate Exposure Risk Decisions” webinar.

Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be able to:  

1. Describe why statistical tools are important for making accurate exposure judgments.
2. Describe AIHA risk categories and 3 basic rules of thumb for increasing the accuracy of exposure judgments. 
3. Apply strategies to make exposure judgments using statistical analysis and example exposure data.

Rustin Reed, PhD, CIH, CSP

Instructor

Dr. Reed is a Certified Industrial Hygienist, a Certified Safety Professional, and an educator whose professional and research experiences have focused on industrial hygiene in the mining industry. He manages multi-million-dollar interdisciplinary health and safety research projects funded by NIOSH. His current research interests include diesel exhaust, heat strain, evaluation of safety training, and the use of machine learning to improve safety and health. Rustin served as the Chair of the AIHA Mining Working Group and the Secretary of the Arizona AIHA Local Section.
