Safety hazards such as falls, slips and trips, and noise get a lot of attention in construction. But far more construction workers die each year from exposure to chemical hazards (such as asbestos, silica, and lead) than from safety hazards. EHS professionals need to be aware of the chemical hazards associated with construction activities. ANSI A10.49, Control of Chemical Health Hazards in Construction and Demolition Operations provides EHS professionals with a qualitative exposure assessment approach to evaluating chemical hazards. During this webinar, we will review the A10 series of standards and evaluate when to perform a quantitative exposure assessment.
Objectives
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Recall ANSI A10 series of standards cover the requirements for Construction and Demolition Operations
- Apply a three-step process to performing a qualitative exposure assessment for chemical hazards associated with construction and demolition operations
- Describe the role of a Job Health Hazard Analysis (JHHA) in the qualitative exposure assessment approach
- List changes in the upcoming 2022 standard
Lecturer
Kent A. Candee, MS, CIH, CSP, ARM, CPCU
Instructor
Mr. Candee has a bachelor’s in Chemistry from the University of Northern Iowa and a Master’s in Industrial Hygiene from Montana Tech. He has over 30 years’ experience both as a technician while serving in the United States Air Force as a Bioenvironmental Engineering Technician and professionally. His professional career has included performing consulting and analytical laboratory analysis, and performing loss control services for an insurance company. Kent is currently at Los Alamos National Laboratory with lead roles in developing procedures, policies, and guidance documents for exposure and risk assessments, silica, and indoor air quality, implemented by field ESH professionals. Other areas he supports are hearing conservation, noise evaluations, oxygen deficiency hazards, pressure safety, respiratory protection, personal protective equipment, ventilation, and monitoring equipment. He is a Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Safety Professional, and obtained the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and Associate in Risk Management (ARM) designations.
