Thanks to the Bowen team for preparing me to pass the CIH exam on the first attempt! Rick was absolutely wonderful to listen to and learn from, and he really helped me wrap my head around some of the more difficult concepts. Taking the Bowen class helped me identify and hone in on the "must focus" topics.

I listened to the lectures (many of them multiple times), made flashcards from lectures and Fleeger, read Burgess and the TLV book, and spent some time with AIHA Toxicology Principles for the Industrial Hygienist. I also spent a lot of time practicing ventilation and general science equations; less so the noise and thermal stress equations. I didn't study any radiation except for listening to the lecture (I ran out of time) and it showed; that was my lowest scoring rubric on the exam.

There were more questions than I expected on emergency response, work environments, and radiation. The first half of the exam seemed much 'easier' than the second half. The Bowen equation practice questions were really good practice for the exam.

Best of luck to all those taking the Spring exam!

I took the test officially passed the exam! I would like to thank Bowen since this company is the reason I passed. I definitely couldn't have done it without them. I took this course in Chapel Hill and I remember sitting there and thinking "I will never pass this exam." I was really stressing over the equations and knowing what units they had to be in. I found it extremely useful to put the equations on a flash card and then flip it over and write what the equation is used for and the units of the equation. I think this is what allowed me to properly select equations. There was only one math problem that I didn't know how to solve. I used quizlet, my own flash cards (made from the lecture slides), the lecture notes, and I did 2-3 sample tests from Bowen a day until I was consistently making 70 or better (shoot more towards 80). I think it is safe to say that I got at least 80-85 questions correct out of the first 90 (that is how easy the first half of the test seemed). The second set of 90 questions made me wonder if I was going to pass or not. Best of luck to everyone!

I sat for the CIH exam today, and the preliminary result showed that I passed. Although, this was my second attempt (first in Spring 2016), the Bowen practice questions were very helpful in passing this exam - thank you Bowen! I practiced the entire questions; 2003 to 2016, more than three times. My advice, practice! practice! Especially the calculations.

Dear Russ,
I want to thank you so much for the amazing advice you gave me for the CIH exam. I passed the exam!!!! I did everything you said from relaxing 2 days before with good night rest; easy review week before; left all the calculations for the second pass, then the hard ones for the third pass and I even had time left to revise them again. Anyway, thank you for your call I meant the world to me and after following your spectacular advice I succeed at last....

Note: I realized I read so much the first time, but the second time I focused more on the Bowen Review course outline information, lectures, practice questions and quizzes. I think it was a very strategy the second time!!!!!! Thank you for putting together so such extraordinary course!

I look forward to taking the CSP course starting next week and hopefully passing it in the next 3 to 4 months.

Thank you!!!!!!

Oh the relief! I took the exam this morning and passed! This was my first attempt and I was quite pessimistic going into the exam. As others have mentioned, the most common rubrics on the exam were toxicology, work environments, noise and ventilation.

As for references, I relied heavily on the notes from the Online Review. I also used the AIHA IH Reference Guide. I bought DataChem, Burgess and Ventilation Manual but didn't even use them. I got addicted to the Bowen CIH iPhone app to the point that I would know the answer without reading the question so that lost its effectiveness a while ago.

I want to thank Bowen, Ricky and Otto. Without your guidance, lectures, notes, practice questions, homework, quizzes and exams, I would not have passed for sure. Thanks again and good luck to those who are yet to sit the exam!

Hi Russ,

I am happy to share that I passed CIH today. It was great to have you and Russ as a mentor. My sincere thanks to you and your team. Also thanks for patiently answering my so many mails and answering my nonsense questions! But truly from my heart, I am grateful to the entire Bowen team.
Thanks once again!

Took the exam and so pleased that I have a preliminary pass!! Thank you to the Bowen instructors, community, and material...all three were so helpful in my preparation! Practicing the available homework, extra questions, quizzes, etc. as much as possible was instrumental, as was making flash cards. I also found the IH Reference and Study Guide particularly helpful.

Preliminary pass! Put the test off as long as I could for this cycle. Appreciate all the information and materials from Bowen. I especially liked the CIH quiz app for my phone. I would use it at random times or locations when it just wasn't convenient to carry other study material with me.

I am proud and very much relieved to post that I took the CIH exam and received a preliminary pass! I cannot thank Bowen enough for the terrific review course and reference materials. I listened to lectures multiple times and did every single one of the review questions from 2003-2016, bookmarked those I didn't know and did them over and over. I did not make it to a CIH study session, but listened to all of them as well. As others have stated, I found the exam heavy on toxicology, ESEAP, work environments, and ventilation. And, for some reason, the second section was harder for me than the first. Best of luck to those who are up next!

Finally did it! This journey took longer than I thought it would but I finally got success. I've been listening to Rick's lectures since I first took the course in 2014 and I don't think I'm ever going to get his voice out of my head. You're a great instructor, Rick.

Nothing much to add for studying hints beyond what others have mentioned, such as know the health effects of industries and chemicals. If you're not successful, write down every question you can remember and find the answers.

For the test day itself, bring ear plugs. I had the misfortune in previous sittings to be near someone who talked to themselves while they wrote their test and that can really break your concentration. Focus on the question wording to find those crucial key words.

Thanks to all who have posted their study tips and words of encouragement. I found these very helpful.

I appeared for the exam and what a relief.....it said preliminary pass!!! Reading the questions and understanding the expectation is one of the key points. I had access to Burgese, Plog and Fleeger along with the Bowen material. I solved all the homeworks, additional problems and final and mark exams more than thrice. Rick, you are a great tutor. I heard each of your lectures more than thrice and I know it helped me a lot. All the best for the friends planning to appear this spring. :)

The stress has lifted! I got a preliminary pass today and it feels good. It was my first try and I credit this review class for giving me the edge! Just as the handbook promised, it was heavy on exposure assessment principles with a good dose of toxicology. Lots of ventilation questions also.

I took the exam this morning and "preliminary passed"! The Bowen CIH prep course provided a ton of great material to aid in studying. All of the homework, quizzes, app, tests, etc... really helped. Rick, you're a fantastic instructor and your passion for teaching really shows in the classroom. (I would have said that whether I passed or not!)

Just took my test yesterday for the first time and received a preliminary pass as well! One thing I found helpful was the Bowen Quiz app. I would do practice quizzes while I was waiting in lines, during the commercials on shows, etc. Test questions were fairly similar to the ones that Bowen puts out. Knowing what exposures come from what industries was important, but overall, nothing too unfamiliar about the exam. Good luck everyone!

I wrote the exam this morning and was given a preliminary pass! This was my first time taking the exam, so I followed exactly what the Bowen CIH Online Review Course recommended. Best of luck to my classmates and the rest of you who may be writing this Spring! Thank you Rick!

I passed the CIH exam today! It took me a couple of tries to get it, so for those that haven't passed yet, keep working you will get it! Thanks Otto and Russ for all of your help!
The current exam has 180 questions. The previous exam had 200 questions, so I guess ABIH took some questions out and I believe they are trialing new questions as well. Definitely know the hazards associated with different industrial processes! My strategy on the exam was to skip all math questions until the end which worked for me but others may prefer to go in order.
Good luck to everyone taking the exam this Spring and congratulations to everyone that passed already!

Preliminary not pass. Just got done taking the test today, finished in like 3.5 hours. I thought I would pass to be honest, didn't really feel the test was that hard. The online course did a good job covering the math and had no struggles in finding solutions, I would say around 30% of the test is math based with a majority focusing on basic science/analytical, noise, and ventilation. Very few questions on ergo or radiation.
Good luck to everyone else who is getting ready to take it. This was my first attempt at the test and first time enrolled with Bowen, I guess I'll try again in July.

I self studied by using the DataChem software and other resources. I didn't pass. It wasn't until I came across BowenEHS that I was able to pass the CIH exam. The resources on this site as a member are phenomenal. I recommend you to anyone who asks me about being a CIH.

Russ,Good afternoon. I wanted to send you a note and THANK you and your team at Bowen EHS, you taught my CIH prep course in Houston, TX back in 2013. Since then I have taken the exam numerous times (not passing) until last week. Due to firewall issues here at work, I was never able to participate in the live CIH reviews but have listened to all of the recent recordings multiple times. All of the instructors: Rick S, Otto, Ernie each brought out something that clicked in my mind while working with their subjects. It is simple math:
Great Product + Fantastic Support = Satisfied Customer
I will continue to send “those in need” to your website.

I took the CIH exam and received a preliminary pass. This was my 3rd attempt. Bowen material was extremely useful in studying and preparing for the exam. Listened to the Bowen lectures 4 -5 times each. Read Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene, Health Hazards in Industry & TLV guide. Used the Quizlet flash cards, Weekly questions, Homework questions and practice CIH Quiz game over the mobile whenever I get a few minutes.

I wrote the CIH exam and received a preliminary pass! I took the course in the Winter but opted to take the exam this fall to have the extra study time. This was my first attempt at the exam and huge thanks are due to the Bowen Team.
Thank you to Russ, David and Otto for a great course that provided a fantastic overview of the material. Thanks to the participants in the course as well - the tips that you all provided were very useful in preparing for this exam.

Happy to report that I got a preliminary pass this week [CIH exam]. The online class was super helpful. I needed to review lot of previously acquired knowledge and also learn a lot of new information. I had 20 year background in analytical chem/sampling and lab safety with 2 years of being radiation safety officer and 5 years of intensive biosafety/BSL3 labs. I had to dust off (re-learn?) lots of math and chemistry from lab and college years. I learned most of the general ventilation, hearing protection, and industrial processes from the Bowen class, webinars, recorded online study sessions, and focused studying on my own to explore specific topics as they came up. I did every practice question I could stand to do (most all of them on the website)--and went through the solution of most every problem I missed until I understood how the correct answer was derived (Including asking teachers and reviewing study sessions).

Besides the Bowen class and expert tutelage of Otto Rusch, I studied the TLV book (the audio guide was very helpful) and the Industrial-Occupational Hygiene Calculations (Stewart et. al 2nd ed). I studied about 6 months intensively for a total of about 130 hours.

Every little thing counts, but Bowen made the biggest difference, by far!!
